This is the Jew that Shakespeare Drew", Alexander Pope. He was born near Culdaff and was baptised Cathal McLaughlin. After emigrating to England, he changed his name to Charles Macklin. He befriended Garrick, Edmund Burke and Henry Fielding In 1761, his best known play, "The True-born Irishman" opened at Crow Street Theatre, Dublin;

in 1767 he brought it to Covent Garden, London. Brian Friel, a patron of the school re-worked this play as "The London Vertigo", which starred John Hurt in Dublin. "A very considerable piece of work from an almost completely self-made man." Brian Friel (1990).

Culdaff Village
The picturesque, yet lively village of Culdaff, is situated in North Inishowen and boasts its beautiful sandy beaches and harbour at Bunagee. Activities such as walking, fishing (river and sea), visits to the archaeological sites at Bocan or Cloncha, or just relaxing on the beach can give one an appetite or thirst which can be satisfied in any of the village restaurants or bars.
